How to read this radar over central Alps
The central Alps are foehn country: when a southerly sets in, the radar shows heavy precipitation south of the ridge and clear skies to the north, sometimes fifteen kilometres apart. Summer storms cling to the slopes exposed to the afternoon sun and often stay stationary, which explains very localised totals.

Does the radar see snow?

Why does the radar show rain when nothing is falling?
The radar beam measures several hundred metres above the ground. In dry air the drops evaporate before reaching it: that is virga. Conversely, in deep valleys the relief screens the beam and the radar underestimates what actually falls.
