Altitude makes the season

Across these 41 resorts, the gap between the lowest and the highest reaches 1 883 metres. That is the difference between a season that depends on snowmaking and one that holds from November to April without trying.

The useful rule: the rain-snow line rises about 150 metres per degree. A village at 1 050 m sees rain replace snow far earlier than one at 2 094 m — and whether the upper slopes stay skiable is decided by the summit, not the village.
